Is Internet Traffic Dying?

November 5th, 2007 · 2 Comments

At 4am on a Sunday morning, I found some startling data. It seems almost that sites are attracting less page views. What could be the cause? And how is it that the sites that seem to be attracting lesser page views, are still making bigger profits than before?

What does it all mean?

I have my theories, but what do you think?

It’s an interesting conundrum. My theory is that there are so many different places to go and see on the Internet that although the number of users continues to increase that traffic is more spread out.

I don’t go to Amazon as often as I used for instance. But when I do, I buy something. At one time it was a place I kind off looked around, did a little window shopping so to speak. Now I go there to update my shopping cart or wish list or to actually make a purchase. I do research there from time to time as well but not real often.

So my guess is the traffic is spread out over more websites but many of the folks that go to those profitable sites are buyers not lookers.

I feel the same as Perry, that there has been such an explosion in websites and blogs that the attention span (& loyalty) is rapidly diluted. Keeping your site/blog fresh and entertaining to retain visitors is a heckuva lot more difficult. It seems that having several authors can help alleviate this task as well as providing different points of view for the readers. Communities may hold readers’ interest for a short time, when a specific topic is featured that they’re interested in, and then they move on.
